Polyester (PET) has a dense macromolecular structure and lacks hydrophilic and active groups, making it difficult to color at room temperature. It requires high temperature and high pressure (130 ℃) or carrier dyeing, which is the underlying characteristic of its dyeing performance and directly determines its applicable scenarios.
1、 Dyeing characteristics of polyester fiber core
1. The molecule is tightly packed and has no hydroxyl or amino groups that can react with dyes. It can only be dyed with dispersed dyes and cannot be dyed with reactive or direct dyes.
2. The glass transition temperature Tg is approximately 70-80 ℃, below which it is difficult for dyes to enter the interior of the fiber; Only when the temperature exceeds Tg and the molecular chain segments move, can the dye diffuse in.
3. Advantages: high color fastness (good washing and rubbing fastness), complete chromatography, excellent sun fastness;
4. Shortcomings: Difficult to dye at room temperature, difficult to apply dark colors; Easy to produce oligomer precipitation, resulting in color spots and spots; Dyeing light colors can easily result in color differences; Low moisture absorption, dark color with weak wet rubbing fastness.
2、 The influence of dyeing performance on different application fields
1. Clothing fabrics (sportswear, outerwear, lining, quick drying fabrics)
Advantages: High sun and water fastness, long-lasting color, suitable for clothing that requires repeated water washing;
Restrictions: High temperature dyeing is required, with processing costs higher than cotton; It cannot be dyed at room temperature, unlike cotton which cannot be soaked and dyed at room temperature; Dark colored wet friction is limited, and tight fitting formal fabrics may be restricted. They are often blended with cotton/viscose to improve hand feel and dyeing characteristics.
Application selection: A large amount of pure polyester is used for the lining of sportswear and assault jackets; There are relatively few close fitting pure spun fabrics.
2. Home textiles (curtains, sandpaper, carpets)
Advantages: Excellent sun fastness, not easily faded under long-term light exposure, very suitable for curtains and outdoor sofas; Good color fastness and resistance to multiple water washes;
Limitations: Dark colors are prone to oligomers, resulting in surface floating color. For carpets with dark colors, additional restoration cleaning is required;
Application selection: curtains, blackout fabric, outdoor home textile polyester.
3. Industrial textiles (geotextile, filter cloth, conveyor belt base fabric, safety belt)
Advantages: Many industrial products do not require dyeing (natural color/black original liquid coloring), avoiding the problem of high-temperature dyeing; Original solution coloring (color masterbatch added during spinning stage), weather resistant and light resistant far beyond post dyeing;
Restrictions: If dyeing and processing are required in the future, high-temperature dyeing will affect fiber strength and shrinkage rate. High strength industrial silk generally does not undergo post dyeing, and priority is given to coloring with the original solution;
Application selection: High strength industrial polyester yarn is mostly dyed with the original solution, and rarely dyed after the fabric is made.
4. Outdoor equipment (tents, sunshades, outdoor clothing)
Advantages: Dispersed dyes have good sun fastness and are not easily faded after long-term outdoor exposure;
Limitations: After ordinary high-temperature dyeing, dyes may migrate in humid and hot aging environments; For products that require high weather resistance, priority should be given to coloring polyester with the original solution.
5. Non woven fabric (non-woven fabric, filter felt)
Can be dyed, but the non-woven fabric has large pores, and dyeing needs to control the uniformity of penetration;
High temperature dyeing can cause thermal shrinkage and size deformation; Thin non-woven fabrics are difficult to ensure even dyeing;
Choice: Disposable non-woven fabric should be used in its natural color; Long term use of filter felt and decorative felt should prioritize coloring with the original solution.
3、 Modification methods to expand application boundaries
To improve the shortcomings of polyester dyeing and make modified polyester, thus opening up new scenarios:
1. Cationic dyeable polyester (CDP): By introducing anionic groups into macromolecules, cationic dyes can be used for dyeing at 100 ℃ and atmospheric pressure, reducing dyeing pressure and making colors more vibrant. It is used for fashion fabrics;
2. Easy to dye polyester: modified to reduce crystallinity, low temperature dyeable, suitable for composite fabrics that cannot withstand high temperatures of 130 ℃;
3. Raw liquid coloring (masterbatch spinning): Adding color powder during spinning, no need for subsequent dyeing, no wastewater, good color fastness, commonly used in geotechnical, tent, and industrial safety belts.
