Polyester fiber (polyester) raw materials are divided into two categories: primary (petroleum based)+recycled (recycled PET), of which more than 90% still come from petrochemicals, and a small amount come from coal chemicals, natural gas, and recycled materials.
1、 Primary polyester (mainstream): petroleum → PTA+EG → PET
The core raw materials are PTA (terephthalic acid) and EG (ethylene glycol, MEG), All derived from petroleum refining:
1. PTA (approximately 70% of PET quality)
Source: Crude oil/naphtha → Cracking/reforming → PX (p-xylene) → Oxidation → PTA
Origin: China (mainly Zhejiang/Jiangsu/Fujian), South Korea, Japan, Middle East, United States
2. EG (ethylene glycol, accounting for about 30%)
Source: Crude oil/naphtha → Ethylene → Ethylene oxide → Hydration → EG
Addendum: A small amount comes from coal to ethylene glycol (Inner Mongolia, Shanxi) and natural gas to EG
Origin: China (mainly in East China), Middle East, North America
3. Aggregation
PTA+EG → condensation → PET slicing → melt spinning → polyester fiber
2、 Recycled Polyester (rPET, Green Growth Rapid)
The raw material is recycled PET products, not from petroleum:
Main: Waste PET mineral water bottles/beverage bottles (accounting for about 98% of recycled materials)
Other: Waste polyester fabric, industrial waste silk, waste film, strapping, fishing nets, etc
Process: Recycling → Crushing → Cleaning → Impurities Removal → Melting and Granulation → Spinning
Current situation: By 2024, the global rPET is expected to reach approximately 8.9 million tons, with China accounting for the majority; A T-shirt requires about 8-10 plastic bottles
